VITA Program has helped families in the Danville Area since 2011

To address the obstacles that prevent hard working families from getting ahead financially, United Way of Danville Area, engaging strong partners Danville Area Community College and the IRS in 2011, helped establish VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance) sites to provide free tax preparation for low-moderate income families in our community. This made possible to date the return of over $3.1 million dollars to local working families who received Earn Income Tax Credits, Child Care and/or Tuition credits. From one site in 2011 to 5 sites in 2016 in Vermilion County, IL and Fountain County, IN in 2016, people are receiving refunds that help them pay bills, plan for emergencies, and perhaps even save some for themselves. East Central Illinois Community Action has joined us as a partner, as has Community Action Program of Western Indiana, who serves as a VITA site.  We have assisted with the Money Smart Week Kids Essay contest by contributing to the scholarship for several years, and by engaging middle and high school students to participate in the essay contest.  We also invest in services that train people for jobs and help students achieve in school, helping to secure more stable financial futures.
